The Unexpected Eye Makeup Color That's About to Be Everywhere

It doesn't matter if you're new to makeup or a professional artist with decades of experience, there's always going to be a shade (or two) in an eyeshadow palette that goes unused.

For me, that shade is green. Even though the color is associated with growth, rest, and relaxation, wearing it on my eyelids seems intimidating. However, I could use some extra peace, balance, and optimism after the past year-and-a-half, so maybe that's why I've been drawn to green eyeshadow as I start to look ahead to 2022.

Not to mention, with all of the variations of green eye makeup looks that recently popped up on red carpets and fashion week runways, it's nearly impossible not to be influenced and give the color another chance.

So hear me out: it is easy being green. At least, when it comes to makeup. From neon lime winged eyeliner to pastel jade eyelids, I've rounded up seven green eyeshadow looks that I'm trying now, but also expect to be trending in 2022.

Gemma Chan

When creating Gemma Chan's 2021 Met Gala look, makeup artist Daniel Martin paid homage to the first Chinese actress Anna Mae Wong by pairing 1920s makeup techniques with modern colors. The result? This gorgeous warm chartreuse eyeshadow, which is the perfect transitional season shade. What's more, you can get the exact product Martin used on your next drugstore run: L'Oreal Paris Brilliant Eyes Liquid Eyeshadow in Grown Gold.

Dua Lipa

You don't have to pick one color when wearing green eye makeup. For Versace's Spring 2022 fashion show, makeup artist Pat McGrath demonstrated how to mix and match the trending shade by layering neon lime and aqua theatrical paints to a graphic cat eye, as seen on Dua Lipa. Then, a hint of Citrine Envy from her Mthrshp Mega: Celestial Odyssey palette was pressed into the eyelids to illuminate the eyes.

Emma Chamberlain

When working with bold color, Emma Chamberlain's neon liner is proof a little goes a long way. After creating a smoky charcoal base and defining the eyes with black line, makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan added the pop of neon with the shade Scylla from Byredo's Eyeshadow 5 Colour Palette in Syren. To get the intense finish, Deenihan dipped her liner brush into mixing liquid before the shadow.

Naomi Campbell

When a specific makeup color shows up twice on the same runway, it's a solid indication it'll be a bonafide trend next season. Along with the neon cat eyes at Versace's Spring 2022 show, makeup artist Pat McGrath demonstrated how to wear green eyeshadow now: an emerald green smoky eye. This jewel-toned look was also created using Citrine Envy from the Mthrshp Mega: Celestial Odyssey palette.

Yara Shahidi

For the 2021 Emmy Awards, the Grown-ish star coordinated her eyeshadow with her Kelly green dress. After lining her eyes with a dramatic cat eye, makeup artist Emily Cheng pressed two layers of Dior's Mono Couleur Couture in Lucky Clover on the center of the lid and blended it to the bottom lash line. She then highlighted the eyes with a touch of Mono Couleur Couture in Gold Star on the center of the lid and inner corners.

Prabal Gurung

If you're new to bold makeup colors, look to Prabal Gurung's Spring 2022 runway for your gateway look. Here, makeup artist Sil Bruinsma painted pops of neon around the inner and outer corners of the eyes using MAC products. One thing to remember when recreating this look? The application shouldn't be too precious.

Giorgio Armani

Say what you will about pastels not being groundbreaking for spring, but a soft jade eye makeup look is enough to make anyone ditch their beloved neutrals. Giorgio Armani international makeup artist Linda Cantello mixed the brand's Eye Tint Liquid Eyeshadow in 37 and 24 for a shimmery effect.
