Princess Charlotte Looks Exactly Like an American Girl Doll in Her Birthday Outfit

Kids who grew up in the '90s and early '00s now have a brand-new reason to be jealous of Princess Charlotte. Not only is the young royal — who turns 5 on May 2 — living out our Mia Thermopolus, The Princess Diaries dreams (except, you know, she's probably aware of her background). Now, she's dressing like an American Girl doll, too.

After Kensington Palace released photos of Charlotte in celebration of her big day, we thought her outfit seemed weirdly familiar. And then, it hit us: Samantha Parkington, the Victorian-era American Girl from 1904, who's BFFs with Nellie and dabbles in embroidery (book readers remember).

Samantha's plaid dress was definitely on our wardrobe wishlist way back when. Now, Charlotte gets to wear one just like it in 2020. Even her hair is pulled back into Samantha's signature half-up, half-down 'do. If that's not living out the ultimate nostalgic dream, well, we don't know what is.

Of course, we're now left wondering about Kate Middleton's childhood. Despite the fact that the royal was raised in the U.K., did she happen to own an American Girl doll while growing up? Records show that the duchess has worn some very Samantha outfits in the past, and since she took the photos of Charlotte, perhaps she felt inspired by this fictional style icon.

Either way, we're now on the hunt for Charlotte's dress in an adult size. Upon further inspection, it also included a Princess Diana-approved detail, a statement collar, which happens to be on trend at the moment, too.
