Today is a major milestone for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry; it's the first day of the rest of their lives (well, at least 12 months) as non-working members of the British royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have kissed goodbye to the UK as their home (and employer), and will forge a new path filled with commercial ventures and a darn site more privacy than was previously afforded to them as royalty. We wouldn't be surprised if there were some bottles popped last night in celebration.

There are plenty of changes going on for Meghan and Harry right now. They recently moved from their temporary place of residence, Canada, to what will be their more permanent home of Los Angeles. They said farewell to their @SussexRoyal Instagram account, choosing not to use it at all after being banned from using the word 'royal' in any of their ventures following their departure from royal life. And their titles have changed, too.

Formerly known as Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as of today the couple will no longer be given 'HRH' status. In a statement confirming the plan of action for Meghan and Harry's departure from the frontline of the royal family, Buckingham Palace said: "The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family."

They will, however, retain the titles of 'Duke and Duchess of Sussex', because - working royals or not - those are the titles they have and that's who they are.

So, how do they want to be known going forward? Will it still be Duke and Duchess, or are they going for something less formal? Well, if their final @SussexRoyal Instagram post is anything to go by, they're keeping it casual. It seems the Sussexes want to be known simply as 'Harry and Meghan'.

In the post, uploaded on Tuesday, the couple explain they will be taking some time out, "focusing this new chapter to understand how we can best contribute."

In their sign off, the formerly-senior royals wrote: "Thank you to this community - for the support, the inspiration and the shared commitment to the good in the world. We look forward to reconnecting with you soon. You’ve been great! Until then, please take good care of yourselves, and of one another."

And they signed off: "Harry and Meghan".

Usually, posts containing quotes by Harry and Meghan on the Instagram account are signed off, "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex". So this change is a statement, and is a surefire sign they'll be going by Harry and Meghan from this point onwards.

Here's hoping their new life brings them everything they hoped it would.
